The aspiring entrepreneur Matthew Bliss decided to take a
dive into the US reality platform ‘Shark Tank’ seeking an investment to scale his family tradition turned business- the Modern
Christmas Trees. In his intense moment of facing the sharks; armed with
his business pitch, the sharks showed no mercy on him!
The billionaire
investors - Lori Greiner, Mark Cuban, Robert
Herjavec, Kevin O’Leary and Barbara Corcoran unleashed multiple strikes on him,
making Bliss jittery over ‘price points’ and ‘scaling.’ However,
fast forward to the end…we see a jubilant entrepreneur with a shark reeled in.
What made a shark
wanting a piece of his business?
To recap; Matthew Bliss
had given everything he had on his start up pitch. Yet nothing was good enough
to get a shark on board. Realising there wasn’t a moment to lose in this once in a life
opportunity he got to chase the American Dream, Bliss began to share the STORY behind the Modern
Christmas Trees.
He skillfully
painted a picture of his business inspiration and tempered his narrative with a
great deal of emotions and personalisation to articulate the reason for
his company’s existence.
The story had it all; the inspiration behind his business -Lawrence Stoecker – the engineer/ architect grandfather who invented the Modern Christmas tree back in the 60s; the little boy who was awe-struck to have first discovered his grandfather’s invention and the grown up young entrepreneur who worked hard on getting a patent and creating a business model around it to keep his family legacy alive.
The moment Bliss began to
share the 'purpose' of his business through his 'story', Barbara was invested
emotionally in the business idea she thought was ‘fresh and different' and
offered him a deal. Also came a counter from Lori,
but Bliss picked Barbara’s $100,000 offer on 18% equity.
"The Shark Tank experience was amazing! I'm so happy
to share my Grandpa's story on such a large, global stage. It’s truly a
blessing that Barbara saw the vision too and we reached a deal,” Bliss
is quoted on PRWEB.COM.
Pairing a business pitch
with a compelling entrepreneur story that clearly articulates the ‘WHY’ of a
business is a great way to engage the potential venture capitalist.
To quote the author and motivational speaker Simen Sinek who published the book Start with Why;“People don’t buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it.”
As a savvy investor,
Barbara was drawn to this entrepreneur’s story of WHY!
